Things We Do Because of Advertising
We buy things because of advertising. That’s the way it works. Of course, there hasn’t always been advertising as we know it. Since there has been, though, it’s had a huge impact on the way we do things. Things we take for granted as part of life, like engagement rings, toilet paper, deodorant, and even Santa Claus have–at least partially–advertising to thank for even being a thing.
Marriage, for instance, is an old tradition. Somewhere along the way, some guy got the idea that he should make his bride-to-be wear a ring, signifying that she was taken. The reason changed, but women kept getting rings from men before marriage. It wasn’t until a mining company discovered a lot of diamonds in South Africa, and then marketed those diamonds on rings, that the sparkly gems became a staple of the engagement ring. De Beers’ advertising later taught the general public that diamonds are forever. To boost sales of larger diamonds, we learned how to make two months’ salary last forever, and the two-month-salary standard was set.
A tradition nearly as old as marriage, green bean casserole, has advertising and a corporation, Campbell’s Soup, to thank. So does the wedding gift registry. The Marshall Field department store created the first registry where couples could let others know what china and silverware should be gifted.
We have a teen from the midwest and a clever salesman to thank for daily use of deodorant and/or antiperspirant. A woman who wanted more recognition for the dads and a group of quick-thinking businesses looking for a way to sell their father-centric goods made Father’s Day what it is.
Probably the biggest surprise of this podcast involves Santa Claus and a little company based in Atlanta, GA. Have a listen and let us know what you think.
