In America, if you want to feed your family without shopping in a grocery store, you need a license to hunt or fish. You have to have a license to operate a business, even a lemonade stand. If you want to carry a gun, drive a vehicle, serve food, or be a childcare provider, you are required to be tested and licensed first. That is, unless the child you’re providing care for is your own. You don’t need a license to have a kid. But… maybe you should. For their 100th episode, Dan, Lyle, and special guest, Brother Brad discuss stupid parenting decisions, or better yet, stupid parents.
That’s right, 100 episodes of Flash Past. To celebrate, the guys got back to the business of discussing news and issues that make history. Stupid parents are growing in numbers. Their stupidity is throwing off Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection, too. Too often, neglegence leads to stupid parents doing stupid things resulting in mortally wounded children. Go to your favorite search engine and do a search for “stupid parenting,” “parenting fails,” or pretty much anything you might associate with bad parenting and you’ll find plenty of news articles telling the heartbreaking stories of children suffering at the hands of their parents and caretakers.
Maybe people are starting to really believe the “it takes a village to raise a child” adage, but they’re misunderstanding it. “Let someone else take care of them. I’m busy gettin’ basted.”
To research for this episode, the hosts each did their own web searches for stories. Even limiting the search range to the last year, there was page upon page of results telling the same story over and over, just with different names.
An interesting finding (completely non-scientific, though) was that these news stories seem to be concentrated in the south and the midwest, much of which makes up what is known as “The Bible Belt.” Maybe they’re taking the “belt” part out of context. Mississippi, Alabama, and Louisiana; Michigan, Indiana, and Illinois; even Florida, a state known for its population’s levelheadedness and logic, has its share of parenting blunder stories in the news.
The hosts discuss several of these stories, and give some pretty harsh opinions and commentary in this episode of Flash Past.
As a bonus, the guys have Steve Lee on for the last segment of the show. Steve and Dan started Flash Past. It was the third podcast on the Netcast Studio network. A lot has changed since then. The group discusses the past and the future of the show.
