On the last show, Lyle and Dan had such a good time talking about cars (and not about current issues) that they decided to do it again. Avoid current issues, that is. What started out a few days before recording as a discussion about horror films turned into a podcast about their favorite movies. (Explicit Content)
For Lyle, when deciding if a movie is worth a trip to the theater, there is no debate. He simply asks friends if they would pay to see the movie a second (or third) time. If the answer is yes, he’s on his way to buy a ticket. Dan, however, tends to only go to the theater for date nights and visual spectacles like Avatar, Star Wars, or pretty much anything by Peter Jackson – that guy knows how to tell a story.
Unsurprisingly, their tastes in movies lean toward what all grown-up boys like. Topping both lists were sci-fi movies like Star Wars the Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi, Revenge of the Sith, and the Star Trek reboots. Ok, topping both lists were Star Wars movies.
Of course, also present were war type shoot-em-ups and hack-and-slash movies like Tombstone, The Godfather trilogy, Bridge Over the River Kwai, Saving Private Ryan, The Patriot, Full Metal Jacket, and the Lord of the Rings Trilogy.
What you may not expect to find on the hosts’ lists, but you definitely will, are puppet movies. Receiving a good bit of talk were Labyrinth, The Dark Crystal, and The Great Muppet Caper – among other Jim Henson type features.
Tied for enthusiasm with science fiction were comedies. Dan and Lyle both enjoy a good comedy, especially if it is filled with one-liners and jabs at social groups. The Big Lebowski, Blazing Saddles, Monty Python and the Holy Grail and Monty Python’s the Meaning of Life, The Princess Bride, and Dogma were among the witty, gritty, satirical, and downright ridiculous comedies the hosts enjoy.
The hosts discussed some of their favorite actors, like Daniel Day Lewis, Sam Neil, and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Something they both agreed on… Event Horizon is the scariest, most effed up movie either has ever seen. If you haven’t watched it yet, bring a friend. You’ll need each other.
