America is involved in a great pissing contest over bathrooms and gender identity. On one side, transgender people and their supporters are battling over the rights of the trans community to use the bathroom of their gender identity, not their biological sex. The other side of the argument has people who believe there is no difference between gender and sex. They see allowing transgender people to use the bathroom of their choosing opens the door for perverts to spy on women and children during what should be private time. Take 30 minutes and listen to Dan and Lyle hash out these arguments.
This bathroom discussion hinges greatly on legislation in North Carolina. HB2 requires any person using a restroom in a public facility like a courthouse, university, or other government owned building to use the facility that corresponds to their birth sex. One thing that’s not, it seems, common knowledge, is that HB2 was introduced to ensure laws intended to force private business owners to allow people to use the bathroom of their choosing would not be enacted.
“There is a big misunderstanding on the difference between gender and sex” said Massachusetts Representative Paul Heroux, “Gender is what it is to be psychologically male or female and sex is what it is to be biologically male or female.”
A transgender woman can still have male anatomy and vice versa. Despite her penis, she identifies as a woman, and therefore is a woman. This brought Dan and Lyle to a conversation about a man born black but identifying as white. The idea is quite similar.
Something that gets under Lyle’s skin about this is trans people comparing their plight to that of black people in America. He gets pretty fired up about this in the second half of the show.
